Patrick A. Salvi of Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C. receives the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago’s Lifetime Achievement Award Tuesday night during a reception at Loyola University Chicago that followed the 83rd annual Votive Red Mass at Holy Name Cathedral. The Red Mass honors and celebrates judges, lawyers, law students and public officials. Cardinal Blase Cupich was joined by dozens of judges donning robes in Tuesday’s procession.

The Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago will hold its first Intellectual Formation Event on Oct. 12 from 7:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, 155 N. Wacker Drive, on the 28th Floor, Conference Room 316. Space is limited.

The topic will be “Technological Progress and Environmental Responsibility” with panelists the Rev. Javier del Castillo and Brendan Dailey.

Del Castillo is Midwest Opus Dei vicar.

Dailey is a senior attorney in the environmental and real estate divisions of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago’s Law Department.

A continental breakfast will be served, followed by a panel presentation and discussion.

There is no cost to attend, but registration is required at the guild website.

The Mass will start with a procession of judges and lawyers down the main aisle.

A reception will follow a block away at Loyola University’s Kasbeer Hall, 25 E. Pearson St.

Chief Cook County Circuit Judge Timothy C. Evans will swear in the new officers of the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago tonight following its annual meeting at Jenner & Block LLP, beginning at 5 p.m.

Cook County Associate Judge Thomas More Donnelly will become president, succeeding Daniel R. Murray of Jenner & Block.

Sister Catherine M. Ryan, O.S.F., executive director of Maryville Academy in Des Plaines, will become first vice president; and Pamela Sakowicz Menaker, communications partner at Clifford Law Offices, will serve as second vice president. Kevin J. Murphy, associate at Jenner & Block, will be sworn in as secretary; and T. Nicholas Tyszka, owner of the Law Office of T. Nicholas Tyszka, will be sworn in as treasurer.

Twenty–eight new members of the board of governors will also will be sworn in for three–year terms.

The Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago will host its annual Day of Reflection Feb. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dominican University, 7900 W. Division St., River Forest.

The theme of the 2017 retreat is “The Name of God is Mercy” and will be led by Sr. Diane Kennedy, who recently retired as a vice president at Dominican University.

Kennedy previously served as vice president and academic dean of the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis.

The Rev. Donald Senior, president emeritus at Catholic Theological Union, who led the retreat last year, will preside at the concluding liturgy at 3 p.m.

The event is open to all lawyers and law students. To register, visit the Catholic Lawyers Guild website at clgchicago.org.

The registration fee is $50 per person; law students are free with advance registration.

The Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago will hold its 82nd annual Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit, traditionally known as The Red Mass, on Oct. 4 at 5:15 p.m. at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St. The Mass is specially designed for those in the legal profession.

Archbishop Blase J. Cupich will serve as the principal celebrant and homilist.

A reception will follow The Red Mass at Loyola University, 111 E. Pearson, 16th floor.

The reception honors Judge Virginia M. Kendall, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, recipient of 2016 Catholic Lawyer of the Year, and James J. Convery, partner at Laner, Muchin Ltd., the recipient of the Catholic Lawyers Guild Special Service Award.

Convery practices employment discrimination law, litigation and civil rights law.

Ginsburg reflects on Scalia at Chicago tribute

In the nearly 23 years that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg served alongside the late justice Antonin G. Scalia, the two often viewed cases from starkly different angles.

Having consistently different viewpoints didn’t prevent the two from sharing what Ginsburg described as an “enduring friendship” when she spoke at a tribute to Scalia Sunday in Chicago.

“I once asked how we could be friends given our disagreement on lots of things,” Ginsburg said. “Justice Scalia answered: “I attack ideas. I do not attack people. Some very good people have some very bad ideas.'”

That was one of several instances in which Ginsburg, by way of the late Scalia’s words, made the crowd laugh at the event hosted by The Lawyers Club of Chicago, The Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago and Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Link to full article.

Yale University Law School professor James Q. Whitman is organizing a seminar with Jenner & Block LLP, the Catholic Lawyers Guild and the John Howard Association. The seminar, “Harsh Justice: The Widening Divide Between America and Europe,” will be held on May 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Jenner & Block Conference Center, 353 N. Clark St., 45th floor.

The moderator will be Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke.

Respondent panelists are Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart, Cook County Circuit Judge Colleen F. Sheehan and Kimberly M. Foxx, former assistant state’s attorney in the juvenile justice division and former chief of staff to Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle.

The panelists will discuss how Whitman’s comparison of the European and American systems might highlight and uncover aspects of the criminal justice system in Cook County and Illinois that could be improved.
